Your Library Card
To get a full-service library card that allows you to borrow and place holds on both physical and digital materials, you will need to visit a library branch in either Buckhorn or Cavendish with valid and current name and address identification.
How to get a full-service library card
To be eligible for a library card you need to:
- live in the Municipality of Trent Lakes or one of our reciprocal partners (Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Cavan-Monaghan, Haliburton, Selwyn, or North Kawartha)
- work in the Municipality of Trent Lakes
- own property in the Municipality of Trent Lakes
Library cards expire once every two years. You may renew your card by telephone or visit a library branch in person to renew your card.
What you can do with a library card
- Borrow books, music, movies and more
- Place holds through the website to reserve materials and have them sent to your nearest branch
- Download eBooks and eAudiobooks
- Access eLearning resources
- Use research databases
- Borrow a Community Pass
People without a permanent address
If you are experiencing homelessness or are precariously housed, you are eligible for a library card valid for 12 months that will allow you to borrow up to 5 items at a time as well as have access to library computers. Name identification must be provided.
Non-Residents
If you do not live, work, go to school or own property in Trent Lakes, you can get a non-resident card. This card will allow you to access library resources and borrow materials. You can register in person at either branch with the required identification. The fee for non-residents is $10.00.

*Renew in person, by phone at (705) 657-3695, or through the library catalogue. Items cannot be renewed if requested by another person.

InterLibrary Loans
How do Interlibrary Loans work?
- Fill out a slip in person to order the book you want.
- You can have up to 5 active Interlibrary Loans at a time (including items currently checked out, items on order, and items requested).
- Items that are available within Canada can take between 3-6 weeks to arrive.
- We will notify you when the item arrives. The item will be available for pick-up for 7 business days.
There are some types of items that you cannot borrow as Interlibrary Loans:
- New releases (books published within the last 12 months)
- Magazines and journals
- E-books
Lending libraries guidelines
The library that owns the item (the lending library) decides:
- How long you can borrow
- Whether you can renew
- The fee for lost or damaged items
